When the seasons change and you swap your winter coat for a light jacket or your sandals for boots, it’s easy to forget the smaller details — belts, watches, scarves, and shoes. Yet these accessories are what complete your look, and they deserve a little care if you want them to stay in great shape year after year. With the right storage, you can extend their lifespan and look forward to rediscovering them when the next season rolls around.

Clean and Condition Before Storing

Before putting anything away for several months, always start by cleaning and conditioning it. Dirt, sweat, and oils can damage materials over time, leading to discoloration or unpleasant odors.

  • Leather belts and gloves should be wiped with a damp cloth and treated with a small amount of leather conditioner. This keeps the leather supple and prevents cracking.
  • Watches can be wiped with a soft microfiber cloth, especially if you’ve worn them during warm months when sweat and moisture can build up on the strap.
  • Jewelry and cufflinks should be polished with a suitable cleaning cloth to maintain their shine.
  • Wool hats, scarves, and gloves can be hand-washed in cold water with a gentle wool detergent so they’re fresh and ready for next winter.

Once everything is clean and completely dry, you’re ready to store it — but how you do that matters.

Keep Moisture and Sunlight Away

The two biggest enemies of your accessories are moisture and direct sunlight. Moisture can cause mold and discoloration, while sunlight can fade colors and dry out materials.

Store your accessories in a cool, dry, and dark place — a closet or dresser drawer works well. Use fabric pouches or boxes to protect them from dust, and avoid plastic bags, which can trap moisture. If you live in a humid area, place small silica gel packets in drawers or boxes to help control moisture levels.

Shoes: Shape and Freshness

Shoes take the most wear and tear, so they deserve special attention when you’re putting them away for the season.

  • Clean and polish your shoes before storing them. Use a shoe cream or polish suited to the material, and let them dry completely.
  • Use wooden shoe trees to help maintain their shape and absorb any remaining moisture.
  • Store them in fabric bags or shoe boxes to prevent dust and scuffs.
  • Avoid basements or attics, where temperature and humidity can fluctuate and damage both leather and glue.

When you bring them out again, they’ll look and feel almost new — no musty smells or stiff leather to deal with.

Belts and Watches: Flat and Protected

A belt that’s been rolled up for months can lose its shape. Instead, store belts flat in a drawer or hang them on a belt rack or hanger. If you have several, a dedicated belt organizer can keep them neat and prevent creases.

Watches should be stored in their original boxes or in a watch case with a soft lining. If you own automatic watches, consider a watch winder to keep them running and prevent the internal oils from drying out.

Hats, Gloves, and Scarves: Air and Order

These small but essential accessories do best when stored loosely and without pressure. Fold them neatly and place them in fabric bags or boxes with lids. Avoid overpacking — too much pressure can cause wrinkles that are hard to remove later.

A great tip is to add a small lavender sachet or cedar block to the box. It keeps fabrics smelling fresh and helps deter moths.

Jewelry and Cufflinks: Separate and Secure

Jewelry and metal accessories should always be stored separately to prevent scratches. Use small fabric pouches, boxes, or a jewelry organizer with divided compartments. Silver pieces can be wrapped in acid-free tissue paper to prevent tarnishing.

If you have jewelry with gemstones, make sure they don’t touch each other — harder stones like sapphires and diamonds can scratch softer materials.

Make It a Habit

Proper storage isn’t just about tidiness — it’s an investment in quality. When you take care of your accessories, they last longer, and you won’t need to replace them as often. Plus, it’s a joy to open your closet next season and find everything clean, fresh, and ready to wear.

Make it part of your seasonal routine: spend half an hour going through your accessories when you switch wardrobes. It’s a small effort that pays off — for your style, your budget, and your peace of mind.
