A quality coat or jacket is an investment in comfort, style, and practicality. Whether you own a classic wool coat, a down parka, or a technical shell, proper care can keep it looking great and performing well for years. With the right maintenance and storage habits, you can extend the life of your outerwear and get the most out of your purchase. Here’s how.

Know Your Material – and Treat It Accordingly

Different fabrics require different care. The first step is to understand what your outerwear is made of and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.

  • Wool coats should not be machine washed. Instead, air them out regularly and use a soft clothing brush to remove dust and lint. For stains, gently blot with a damp cloth or take the coat to a professional cleaner.
  • Down jackets can usually be machine washed, but use a gentle detergent designed for down and run an extra rinse cycle. Tumble dry on low heat with a few clean tennis balls or dryer balls to restore loft.
  • Shell jackets and technical outerwear with membranes (like Gore-Tex) should be washed with a specialized detergent and never with fabric softener. This helps maintain the water-repellent finish and breathability.
  • Leather jackets need regular conditioning with leather balm or cream to prevent drying and cracking. Store them away from direct sunlight and humidity.

By tailoring your care routine to the material, you’ll preserve both the look and performance of your outerwear.

Clean and Wash with Care

Outerwear doesn’t need frequent washing—overwashing can wear down fabrics and coatings. Instead, air your jacket after use and hang it outside on a dry, breezy day to remove odors and moisture naturally.

When it’s time to wash, always follow the care label. Use gentle cycles and cool water. Avoid fabric softeners, as they can damage down insulation and waterproof membranes. Opt for a detergent made specifically for outerwear instead.

After washing, refresh the water-repellent coating with a spray-on or wash-in treatment. This helps your jacket resist rain and dirt, keeping it functional longer.

Store It the Right Way

How you store your outerwear between seasons has a big impact on its longevity. When winter turns to spring and it’s time to put your heavy coat away, do it properly.

  1. Clean your outerwear before storing it. Dirt, sweat, and oils can degrade fabrics over time.
  2. Hang it on a sturdy hanger to maintain its shape. Avoid thin wire hangers that can leave shoulder marks.
  3. Use a breathable garment bag, preferably cotton, instead of plastic. This prevents moisture buildup and mildew.
  4. Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Excess heat can damage down, wool, and synthetic fibers.
  5. Give it space. Don’t cram coats together—allow air to circulate so they keep their shape and volume.

For down jackets and parkas, give them a gentle shake every so often to keep the filling evenly distributed.

Small Repairs Make a Big Difference

A loose button, a small tear, or a broken zipper doesn’t mean your jacket’s life is over. Many minor issues can be fixed easily at home or by a tailor.

  • Zippers can often be repaired or replaced for much less than the cost of a new coat.
  • Buttons and seams can be reattached with matching thread.
  • Small rips in technical fabrics can be patched with repair tape or fabric patches available at outdoor stores.

Taking care of small problems early prevents them from turning into bigger, more expensive ones.

Give Your Outerwear a Long Life

Proper care and storage aren’t just about saving money—they’re also a sustainable choice. The longer your outerwear lasts, the less often you need to replace it, reducing waste and conserving resources.

With a little attention and consistent maintenance, your favorite coat or jacket can stay stylish, comfortable, and functional for many seasons to come. It doesn’t take much—just a few good habits and a bit of care.
