A bra should support, lift, and feel comfortable – but for many women, it does the opposite. Studies show that most women wear the wrong size, which can lead to sore shoulders, poor posture, and everyday discomfort. The good news? With just a few simple steps, you can find your correct bra size – and feel the difference right away.

Why the Right Size Matters

Wearing the right bra size isn’t just about comfort. It affects how your clothes fit, how you move, and even how you feel about yourself. A bra that’s too small can dig in and leave marks, while one that’s too large won’t provide proper support. When your bra fits correctly, it feels almost weightless – and your posture naturally improves.

The right size can also help prevent neck and back strain, especially if you have a fuller bust. So finding your correct size isn’t only about appearance – it’s about health and well-being too.

How to Measure Yourself

All you need is a soft measuring tape and a few minutes. You’ll take two measurements: one around your ribcage (underbust) and one around the fullest part of your bust.

  1. Measure under your bust – Wrap the tape snugly around your ribcage, just under your breasts. Round to the nearest whole inch.

    • If the number is even, add 4 inches.
    • If it’s odd, add 5 inches. This total is your band size (for example, 34 or 36).
  2. Measure over your bust – Measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level and not too tight. Round to the nearest whole inch.

  3. Find your cup size – Subtract your band size from your bust measurement. The difference determines your cup size:

    • 1 inch = A cup
    • 2 inches = B cup
    • 3 inches = C cup
    • 4 inches = D cup
    • 5 inches = DD (or E) cup
    • 6 inches = DDD (or F) cup

Example: If your band size is 36 and your bust measures 39 inches, the difference is 3 inches – meaning you wear a 36C.

Signs Your Bra Doesn’t Fit

Even with the right measurements, fit can vary between brands and styles. Here are some common signs that your bra isn’t fitting properly:

  • Straps slip off or dig in – may indicate the wrong band size or cup size.
  • Underwire pokes or presses into your breast or underarm – the cup is too small.
  • Band rides up your back – the band is too large.
  • Breasts spill over the cups – go up a cup size.
  • Gaps or wrinkles in the cups – go down a cup size.

A good rule of thumb: the band should fit snugly around your body without pinching, and the straps should support but not carry all the weight.

Different Types of Bras – and When to Wear Them

Once you know your size, you can choose the right bra for your body and lifestyle.

  • T-shirt bra – smooth and invisible under fitted tops.
  • Balconette – lifts and shapes, perfect for lower necklines.
  • Full-coverage bra – offers maximum support, ideal for larger busts.
  • Push-up bra – enhances cleavage and adds volume under dresses or tops.
  • Sports bra – essential for workouts, reducing movement and protecting breast tissue.

It’s smart to have a few different styles so you’re ready for any outfit or occasion.

How to Make Your Bras Last Longer

A well-fitting bra is an investment, and with proper care, it can last a long time. Hand wash or use a lingerie bag on a gentle cycle, and always air dry – never use the dryer. Rotate between several bras so the elastic can rest between wears.

Store them flat or hanging to maintain their shape, and check your fit regularly. Your body can change over time, and your bra size might too.

Feel the Difference

Once you find your correct bra size, you’ll notice the difference immediately. Your clothes fit better, your posture improves, and you feel more confident and comfortable. It’s a small adjustment that can make a big impact on your everyday comfort – and your confidence.
