Few things can ruin a great workout faster than the smell of sweaty gym clothes. No matter how often you wash them, that stubborn odor sometimes just won’t go away—especially in synthetic fabrics like polyester and spandex. The good news? You can get your gear smelling fresh again with the right approach. Here’s a complete guide to removing sweat odor from workout clothes—and keeping it from coming back.

Why Workout Clothes Smell

Sweat itself doesn’t actually smell. The odor comes from bacteria on your skin that break down sweat and produce that sour, musty scent. When you exercise, those bacteria transfer to your clothes. Synthetic fabrics tend to trap moisture and bacteria more than cotton, which is why the smell can linger even after washing.

Wash the Right Way from the Start

One of the biggest mistakes people make is tossing sweaty clothes into a gym bag or laundry basket and leaving them there for days. That gives bacteria time to multiply. Instead, follow these steps:

  • Air out your clothes immediately after a workout if you can’t wash them right away.
  • Wash as soon as possible—ideally the same day.
  • Turn clothes inside out so detergent reaches the areas that were closest to your skin.
  • Use a detergent made for activewear—these are formulated to break down sweat, oil, and bacteria in synthetic fabrics.
  • Skip the fabric softener. It can coat fibers, trap odor, and reduce the fabric’s ability to wick moisture.

Remove Stubborn Odors with Vinegar or Baking Soda

If the smell has already set in, a few simple household ingredients can help neutralize it.

  • Vinegar soak: Mix one part white vinegar with four parts cold water and soak your clothes for 30 minutes before washing. Vinegar kills bacteria and neutralizes odor.
  • Baking soda boost: Add half a cup of baking soda to your washing machine along with your regular detergent. It helps eliminate odor and softens the water for a deeper clean.

Both methods are gentle on fabrics and safe to use regularly.

Wash at the Right Temperature

Many people assume hot water is best for removing odor, but most activewear can’t handle high heat. Hot water can damage elastic fibers and ruin the fit. Instead, focus on:

  • A longer wash cycle to give detergent time to work.
  • An extra rinse cycle if your machine has one, to remove all traces of sweat and detergent.
  • Cleaning your washing machine occasionally by running an empty cycle with a cup of white vinegar. This prevents bacteria and odor from building up inside the machine.

Dry Clothes Properly

After washing, make sure your clothes dry completely. Damp fabric can quickly start to smell again.

  • Air-dry your clothes—preferably outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
  • Avoid the dryer when possible, as heat can damage synthetic fibers and make odors worse over time.
  • Ensure clothes are fully dry before storing them in drawers or closets.

Prevent Odor from Coming Back

Once you’ve eliminated the smell, a few simple habits can help keep your workout clothes fresh:

  • Wash activewear separately from regular laundry.
  • Use a sports detergent regularly.
  • Change into clean clothes after every workout.
  • Don’t leave damp clothes in your gym bag.
  • Air out your shoes and gym bag—they can also harbor odor-causing bacteria.

A Fresh Start for Every Workout

With the right care, you can keep your workout clothes smelling clean and lasting longer. It just takes a few smart habits and quick action after each workout. The result? Fresh, comfortable gear that makes it a little easier to hit the gym, the trail, or the yoga mat with confidence.
